This is the place to post your theme camp ideas for the all-new, ever expanding Snowflake Village 2002 at the Burning Man Festival

Snowflake is a haven for long-distance travelers to the Burning Man Festival, Gerlach Nevada, Aug 26 to Sept. 2, 2002.  Our groups come mainly from the central US and Canada, the East coast, and Europe.

Why join our village? How about a nice spot on the esplanade, a big audience for your shows, more time to explore, less stuff to carry, and a chance to be a part of a big thing, joining with the other long-distance ArtWarriors at the Burning Man?

We have some exciting changes for this year (our third!) that should make it the best year ever, and boost our confederation to a whole new level of coolness.

First, is a large-scale, visual Village Centerpiece that will be a joy to experience. We are proposing Snowflake Mountain, a teepee-like tower at least twelve feet tall, with translucent skin, lit from within by multiple ultraviolet fixtures.

(Snowflake Mountain Prototype, standing in the burningSNOW center for the experimental arts, Milwaukee)

On the outside we draw mountain things in glowing paint: trees, rivers, skiers, chateaus, snowflakes. All the camps can help us draw and paint this thing.

All around this, a circular glowing area some 25 feet in diameter, with "walls" made of glowing strips, strings, vines, beads, and netting, hung from a lightweight framework.  Again, all the camps can add elements to this, keep your eyes open for fluorescent stringy things...

This whole glowing structure will comfortably fit in the center of the Snowflake Plaza, leaving a circular roadway all around.

Other changes so far: (more posted as we know 'em)
Videogasm moves up to the front, to adjoin the Esplanade.
Space Vikings changes gears to become more of a Village hospitality outfit.
Clevian Circularity brings projection video setup for an animated Village sign.

How to Sign Up for Snowflake Village 2002:

bullet Post a new article (starting a new thread)
bullet Search the articles for a word or pattern

BE SURE TO TELL US:

Your basic idea---what does your camp look like, how is it interactive.
How many people are coming.
Any towers or structures over 15 feet tall?
Amounts of flammable liquids and generators.
Any really loud sound systems?

Be as accurate as you can, all this info goes to Burning Man, these are the estimates we use to get space/placement from Burning Man.

Size(s) of your PUBLIC artworks or structures.  These will not come out of your camp's space allotment, so that if you bring a 200 sq. ft. PUBLIC structure, your camp will actually be made 200 sq. ft. bigger. (Generally, space is divided according to population)

Most important: how does it all get cleaned up? If you saw wood, where does the sawdust go? If you serve cherries, where do the pits go? If you paint, where does the thinner go? We have to LEAVE NO TRACE, so have a plan for how you will clean up.

Please post something as soon as you can, to give us a general idea. If you have revisions, just post the whole idea again and call it "version 2" or something. As the deadline approaches, your most recent post will used for planning.

P.S. Yes, you should also post your Theme Camp on Burning Man's Theme Camps page--just add a note that you will be camping with Snowflake this year!

See you there!
