MAPS Camp The Multiplidicplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies and BOP camp are joining forces this year to bring a variety of services to the burning man community. For the last several years MAPS has staffed the Sanctuary, a safe-space for people having a particularly difficult psychedelic experience on the playa as well as a place where one can go to talk to someone who is there to listen. In the past, the Sanctuary has been tucked away near the Ranger station in Center Camp and has provided much-needed services to about 30 people last year. MAPS staffs the Sanctuary with psychedelic researchers, psychotherapists and volunteers – a phenomenal resource to the Burning Man community. Unfortunately their services have been somewhat underutilized due to the decision for security reasons to only let the Rangers know of the existence of the MAPS team. This year, MAPS camp will not only sponsor the Sanctuary, but also host the Pallenque Norte talks and a multitude of workshops, classes and music. The camp will have a large 60 foot dome to host the talks, workshops and events. From noon-6 p.m. every day we will host lectures and workshops – the Pallenque Norte talks, and various workshops such as holotropic breathwork and other events yet to be determined. On certain evenings we will host live music, and play BOP outside of the main dome. BOP is a jousting-type game where each particpant gets a 12 foot long flexible PVC pole with a stuffed animal affixed to one end with which they must remove their opponent’s helmet. BOP events will be scheduled for certain evenings; however, it will always be there for all who would like to come and play. The chill-out dome (a 30 foot dome) will be home to the various professionals involved with MAPS, and perpetually open to all who would like to come and chat . It will be decorated by visionary artist Kevin Loftus. The space will also be used for smaller workshops and classes. In the evenings we will have live downtempo and ambient music, and will also play recorded talks by Alan Watts, Terrence McKenna, Timothy Leary, etc. The Sanctuary dome itself will be nestled up against the back of the camp on the first street (amnesia), and will be small and quiet, staffed by trained members of the MAPS community. The camp will be 24/7 interactive as we will be hosting many events, there will always be someone to come and talk to, and BOP will be set up in such a way that anybody can come by, pick up some BOP sticks and challenge someone to a duel.
