MAPS: The Psyche-delic Centre The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and BOP Camp are joining forces this year as MAPS: The Psyche-delic Centre to bring 24/7 interactive psychedelic services to Black Rock City. For the past two years MAPS has staffed Sanctuary, a safe-place created by the Black Rock City Rangers for people experiencing psychedelic-related emergencies and other mental crises. Sanctuary is tucked away in a private location and, last year, provided much-needed services to about 30 people. BOP Camp entertained burners last year with an interactive jousting-type game where participants use a 12-foot long flexible PVC pole with a stuffed animal affixed to one end to remove their opponent’s helmet. MAPS will be a place where off-duty Sanctuary workers--MAPS professionals, psychedelic researchers, psychotherapists and other volunteers--will be available to talk with visitors. A 30-foot chill-out dome decorated by visionary artists Kevin Loftus will be open 24/7 for anyone who would like to come by and chat. This space will also be used for smaller workshops and classes. In the evenings, live downtempo and ambient music will be played, as well as recorded talks by psychedelic luminaries from ages past such as Alan Watts, Terrence McKenna, Timothy Leary, and others. The camp will host the Palenque Norte lecture series—providing daily lectures and discussion groups from noon to 6pm on subjects related to psychedelics and psychedelic therapy from the main 60-foot dome. When the lecture series is not running, this dome will be host to workshops such as Holotropic Breathwork, a non-drug method for achieving altered states of consciousness, and other events yet to be determined. Outside of the main dome, official BOP events with live music will be scheduled on several evenings. The BOP game will be left outside so participants can come by and play anytime.
